What's New at eZedia

1. Apple® Releases QuickTime™ 5
Why is this important to eZediaMX users? eZediaMX relies heavily on QuickTime's advanced media handling capabilities. The programming team at eZedia has been building and developing with the beta QuickTime versions for some time and has been hotly anticipating the final release of QuickTime 5. Users of eZediaMX benefit from the full rich media experience, as the program is even more robust because of the QuickTime technology.

In a corporate release, Apple said, "QuickTime has been long established as the digital media standard for capturing, encoding and delivering content on the Internet," said Philip Schiller, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "QuickTime 5 offers incredible new capabilities for everyone who creates or views multimedia content."

QuickTime is fast becoming the worlds leading cross-platform multimedia technology and is today the only open source, standards-based streaming solution. In its first week of release, QuickTime 5 was downloaded more than 1.5 million times. To get your update, go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

2. Show the world who you are – eZedia at School
In this issue of eZedia World, Lois Robinson, Technology Coordinator for Balmoral Hall School for Girls, tells us how their school shows the world who they are! Read all about it below or, if you prefer you can watch the QuickTime™ Movie of Lois at eZediaMX Testimonials

...And now here's Lois:

"I guess I'd start with telling you why it's great for teachers! Having the technology background that I do, it's not me that is going to be teaching the students. The teacher is the one who we want to use it, not me. So it
has to be software that is easy enough for them to feel comfortable with and where the students can actually be the technology experts and the teacher the curriculum expert.

We do a full marketing CD of the school, which makes it very interesting because I'm able to capture everything that goes on here. We can take video-pieces from all of our musicals, we can take the choir singing and have an interactive tour of the school that contains very little text and use it to market to our international agents.

Students are also building their portfolios, which is becoming very big at schools. You go to university now with a portfolio of all of your work, all of your achievements, all of your awards...and they are doing it in eZedia. We had a student last year from Korea who took all of her artwork, photographed it, scanned it and put it in a CD and instead of carrying one of those big bags with all her pictures in it, she just took the CD around."

Now, that's how you show the world who you are!

3. Growth of Multimedia in Manitoba – Digitized Manitoba
by Norm Lee
eZedia CEO, Art Monk, keynoted the Digitized Student Technology Conference, May 1, 2001 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Digitized attracted almost 300 high school students and teachers to 14 sessions about the new world of technology and careers in the field.

Digitized takes place with its partner conference, TechQuest 2001 - Excellence in Business, bringing together today's and tomorrow's technology gurus. Mike Berg, Manager, Multimedia Development at eZedia, delivered two well-attended breakout sessions. The eZedia workshops have always been a "sellout" at all three of the past Digitized Conferences in Winnipeg.

eZedia was by far the most active participant in the conference, serving as the judge for the Student Award for the Chamber of Commerce's Innovation in Technology Award, a prize once won by the company. Matthew Simonsen of Warren Collegiate in Warren, Manitoba won the category, which included over 200 submissions. He receives free eZedia software as well as $500.00 and a plaque. Next year all the winning entries will be done with eZedia, yeah!

eZedia is a proud sponsor and will again be leading a popular workshop on multimedia as well as exhibiting, when Digitized moves to Calgary, Alberta - May 11, 2001. As well, Art Monk will again be presenting the morning keynote address. For more information on Digitized, visit their web site at http://www.digitizedconf.ca/AB/index.html

4. Did you know about the eZediaMX Path Object?
This month in eZedia World we highlight the Path Object. We spoke to Mike Berg, Manager, Multimedia Development at eZedia.

eZedia World: So Mike, what is the Path Object?
Mike Berg: The Path Object allows users to create animated sequences within an eZediaMX document. That's the technical answer, but really the Path Object allows you to draw a path or put an object on a path and move the object down the path you've created.

eW: Where would I find the Path Object?
MB: The Path Object can be found on the Tool Bar. It is the icon third from the right...the one that looks like a road.

eW: Okay, so Mike, how do I use the Path Object?
MB: Well, I'll give you an example of how you might move a Graphic Object around your frame using the Path Object. Just click on the Path Object and select the "lasso" from the drop down menu. Just click and drag on the Document Window to draw a path. Make it any shape you want - check mark, spiral, anything that inspires you. Now, double click anywhere along the Path Object you have just drawn to open up the dialog box. Make sure you
deselect the Loop option, but leave the rest of the properties as they are. Technically speaking, you now have created a Path Object that is ready to have a Graphic Object move along it. What this means is that you've just created the "path" or direction that your Graphic Object is going to go in.

eW: Okay, seems simple enough, but where do I get a Graphic Object from?
MB: Just select the Graphic Object tool from the Tool Bar. The dialog box will open and in the file window you'll see our logo. For simplicity sake, select this object. This will now appear in the Document Window along with the path you drew. Create a link between these two objects by selecting the Link Object from the Tool Bar. Drag a link from the eZedia Logo to anywhere along your path. Don't forget to save your document! To see the animation you've created, just select Run from the Frames menu on the Menu Bar.

eW: You make it sound easy enough Mike, but what if I need some help? Does eZedia have any resources to help me?
MB: Sure, we have an animation tutorial on our web site. In it, you'll learn how to do what I've just talked about along with other eZediaMX animation methods. Just go to Tutorials and you'll find all of our tutorials plus our reference manual. Hey, just use your imagination and have fun. You'll be surprised at what you can do!
