What's New At eZedia

1. Update on the National Educational Computing Conference 2001 (NECC)
Chicago, Illinois
June 25 – 27, 2001

eZedia has just returned from NECC where over 13,000 teachers, tech coordinators, media specialists and administrators came from across North America to see the best in software, hardware and Internet products and service solutions for their educational institutions. eZedia was one of over 417 companies who exhibited during the 3-day show at McCormick Place in Chicago.

eZedia would like to thank all of the hundreds of attendees who came by the booth and whose excitement and enthusiasm over eZediaMX confirmed that we are doing it right. A special thanks to those people who came to the Mini-Mall at Navy Pier to purchase eZediaMX and who then told friends what they were missing! We even had a new user come by the booth the NEXT day with an eZedia file in hand to show us how they show the world who they are!

Check our web site at eZedia Events often for updates on upcoming events, shows and workshops that eZedia will be attending!

See you all (or is that y'all) next June in San Antonio, Texas for NECC 2002.

2. eZedia & the National Education Technology Standards (NETS) Project
The following is a small excerpt from a draft of a presentation scheduled for Fall 2001 by Drs. Jane and Michael Madden of Francis Marion University. The article discusses the National Education Technology Standards and how eZedia supports the development of these NETS proficiencies for both students and teachers.

"As a result of the rapidly evolving nature of the economy from an industrial era to one based on digital technologies, schools face particular challenges in preparing students to function effectively in an environment of constant change. The challenges cross all discipline areas and grade levels and cause all partners in the education enterprise to re-examine the concept of effective preparation in fundamental learning skills. As a result, ISTE has joined with other partners to establish a set of core skills and understandings. 'The primary goal of the ISTE NET Standards project is to enable stake holders in PreK-12 education to develop national standards for educational uses of technology that facilitate school improvement in the US.'"

3. POP! Magazine contest winners
In March of this year, eZedia, in conjunction with POP! Magazine for kids, sponsored an article on How to Make a Multimedia Masterpiece! POP! Magazine takes kids on adventures through science, history, literature, social studies, world issues and more and is distributed to over 325,000 students across Canada as well as being available on newsstands across North America.

As well as sponsoring this article we also held a contest through POP! and our web site to "Name the eZedia Lizard." We received over 430 entries and after much discussion, laughter and ultimately democratic voting, we have decided that the name of our eZedia Lizard will be... Reptile Lyle!

Mitchell from Rossland, British Columbia has won some great eZedia gear! Honourable mentions go to our runners-up, Braedon, also from British Columbia, who suggested Guacamole Rolley and Taylor from Winnipeg, Manitoba who entered with the name, Lizardo.

Congratulations to all of the kids who took the time to enter on-line and through POP! Magazine. Watch for Reptile Lyle to be your guide for future eZedia adventures.

4. Show the world who you are - eZedia at Home
In this issue of eZedia World, Ryan Chodachek, an eZedia user tells us how he shows the world who he is by using eZediaMX. Read all about it below or if you prefer watch the QuickTime – Movie of Ryan.

And now here's Ryan:

When my brother Justin first told me that he and his girlfriend Kristy were getting married, I had to do something special for them. Instead of buying dinnerware I thought I'd rather give them something more personal – so I created a multimedia wedding album. All it took was to scan in some old photos of both of them, add some of the video I shot from the engagement party and the wedding and then throw in some music and record a voiceover. Then I used eZediaMX to put it all together. It was simple – just like that I was able to create something that will last them both a lifetime. I thought it was better than a photo album.

You bet Ryan!

5. Do you know why QuickTime™ is so important to eZediaMX?
In this month's issue of eZedia World we interview Chris Werstiuk, Director, Product Management at eZedia to find out more about QuickTime and how it is utilized by eZediaMX.

eZedia World: So Chris, what exactly is QuickTime?
Chris Werstiuk: At its simplest, QuickTime is software that allows both Macintosh and Windows users to play back audio and video on their computers. There are various levels to QuickTime depending on your requirements – from viewing still images to streaming media in real time on the Internet.

eW: So why is QuickTime so important for using eZediaMX?
CW: eZediaMX utilizes the "architecture" behind the QuickTime software to expand the number of file formats that can be imported and used in our software. eZedia Player then uses QuickTime's underlying multimedia "engine" to play back the rich media you've integrated. Thanks to the unique interaction between eZediaMX and QuickTime, it provides seamless media integration between Macintosh and Windows.

eW: So how do users get QuickTime and how much does it cost?
CW: QuickTime is provided to you when you purchase eZediaMX. If you do not have it already, the eZedia installer will load it on your computer. If you already have QuickTime, our installer will check to see which version you are running and if the version provided on our CD is newer, the installer will replace your version of QuickTime including the QuickTime Player, PictureViewer, and browser plug-ins. QuickTime is free of charge however QuickTime Pro is an upgrade to QuickTime, and is $29.99.

eW: Do I need QuickTime Pro?
CW: Only if you plan on doing any level of advanced video editing with your QuickTime Movies. QuickTime Pro provides a more flexible multimedia authoring platform as it allows you to play back full-screen video, resize movies, save movies for playback at anytime, create streaming movies for the web, copy and paste popular Internet media formats or edit movies imported from your digital camera. For most users, QuickTime will suffice.

eW: Thanks for talking with eZedia World Chris and continue to keep us updated on how future enhancements to QuickTime will further complement eZediaMX.
